We think that the instrumental of Kanye West & Jay-Z's track "No Church In The Wild" what we have heard from the film "Safe House" fits in with the conventions of a thriller, as the music builds up the suspence that something is going to happen, as it helps to create an intense atmosphere, similar to that which is present in the film "Safe House" we would like to create a similar piece of music by using garage band.
we also like the sound of the instrumental form the song "Till i collapse" by Eminem, the instrumental fits in with the dark tone that is presented during the graveyard scene. by using garage band we will try to create similar piece of music to uses in our thriller film.
for our film idea we like the sound of the song "Skeletons" by Stevie Wonder, the song fits in with the ideas of a gangster film, where they are casually walking along to a location, similar to the instrumental heard in "Reservoir dogs". instead of using the song directly, we will try to create a similar piece of music by using garage band.
We like the idea of using a graveyard from "saving private ryan" but recreating it to have a darker tone for our thriller film, as it will be used to show a man visting the grave of someone who he has killed. As you can see the two settings have several similarities and we feel that we can use the setting from the film to recreate an eerie atmosphere in our scene.
Pulp Fiction We like this scene from the Quentin Tarantino film 'Pulp Fiction', we feel that it combines 'Mise en scene', costume and sound effects well to create a great connotation of the gangster lifestyle and gives the Demographic a good idea on the types of characters in the film. Tarantino uses a wide range camera shots for this scene with lower angle shots to emphasise the power of Samuel L. Jackson's character and a higher angle shot to show the Character that is killed with less status and less power making him seem weak. The costume of Samuel L. Jackson & John Travolta dressed in suits to create an connotation of the two men as being gangsters or important men. It gives them more power which helps to create the scene of them intimidating the men in the hotel room and makes it more believable for the demographic and audience.
The setting of the hotel room along with the 'Mis en scene' of alchol on the tables and ash trays creates an idea that the men in the hotel room may be suspicious etc. The sound effects and diegetic sound of Samuel L. Jacksons speech along with the diegetic sound of the gun shots creates a really powerful effect and helps to make this scene an iconic memorable scene. Sean, Katie, Liam
Resevoir Dogs We like this scene from the Quentin Tarantino classic 'Resevoir Dogs'. Although the scene is very simple and doesn't contain to many complex camera shots/angles, we feel that it mixes the use of costume, music and editing to create an iconic atmospheric scene. The scene really connotes a gangster idea using the men dressed in classic suits and the 'mise en scene' of cigarettes, the setting etc. It really gives off a cool vibe and the slowed down speed of the walking combined with the music really gives the demographic an idea that this is maybe a team of criminals about to do a job etc This scene has become iconic and whenever you see the scene or hear the music from the scene you instantly think 'Resevoir Dogs' something we would like to capture with our own scene from the film 'Cold Game' The way the different camera shots are used to enforce power, and show the gangsters to be of more status is something we would also like to create in our own scene. We went round asking random people of the public what their views were on thrillers, and what first came to their mind when they were asked about the thriller genre. Also they gave their opinions on their favourite thriller films and recent thriller TV series.
Although this is not a clip from our chosen genre we were inspired by a variety of different camera shots and the seamless editing.
This extreme close up reveals the drivers raw emotions. We would use an extreme shot of our killers eye before and after the flash back to show his changing emotions. By using a zoom towards the eye it could be used to represent his own thoughts as if the audience are going inside his thoughts.
An establishing shot has been used to show the car so the audience know what to concentrate on. We would use an establishing shot at the very beginning of our thriller which would show the graveyard and the church early in the morning whilst it is still foggy so that the audience will clearly be able to tell that it's going to be a thriller without a happy ending because of the pathetic fallacy.
There are a number of tracking shots throughout the clip to show the speed and agility of the car. In our film opening we would use a tracking shot when the killer is chasing his victim, this would enable us to zoom in and out of the victims fear and the killers anger to show the panic and the rushed, fast paced action scene which will intrigue audience as they will be willing the victim to escape.
A point of view shot is used to show everything that the actor is seeing. Our film 'Cold Game' will use a point of view shot to show, the killer looking down upon the grave of his latest victim and even the victim watching the killer as he comes towards her.
For our film idea we have chosen to use the idea of a graveyard scene from 'Saving Private Ryan' we want to create a similar scene that is used in the film because we want to emulate how the scence changes according to the time period. The scene in 'Saving Private Ryan' changes from the battle as captain miller dies, a hard cut jumps to Private ryan at his grave to evoke an emotional response from the audience. As a group we like the idea of suddenly changing from a dramatic scene straight into a more sombre scene to shock and intrigue the audience as this will hopefully interest them to watch the rest of the film; however, instead of using the idea of visiting a graveyard of a war hero, we want to use the idea of someone visiting the grave of their victim, and then the use of a dramatic flash back showing the horrific 'accident' taking place will hopefully make this a memorable opening. Instead of the idea of going into the future showing the graveyard as seen in 'saving private ryan' our group have chosen to go into the past so we learn about the killer through his own memories in 'Cold Game'.
